2012 First Flush Darjeeling Full-Leaf
Spring is cause for celebration for lovers of the leaf. The dormancy period is over for the tea plants and the Darjeeling hillsides are radiant with young, fragrant leaves. Rich in essential oils, these prized leaves create an exquisite flavor, unique to our Darjeeling 2012. Carefully selected from Thurbo Estate at an elevation of over 5,000 feet, Darjeeling tea plants grow alongside orange orchards and orchid vines, nestled in the foothills of the mighty Himalayan Mountains.
Spring in Darjeeling this year brought unusually dry conditions. Quality was high, but yields were low, making this tea quite a rare find. The first flush, or first plucking, of spring in Northern India’s famed tea-growing region of Darjeeling brings forth the singular sweet flavor of these superior, aromatic leaves. Pronounced muscatel notes are followed with a soft astringency and a lingering finish. A fruity liquor rounds out this fresh, well-balanced cup.
Very limited quantities are expedited via air freight so that you may enjoy this extremely fresh, special reserve tea regarded by many as the ultimate tea experience.

A little too grassy for my taste | May 15, 2012 |

I made a pot of this the day it arrived. A fan of other Darjeelings, I had high hopes but started to doubt as soon as I noticed that the tea had been picked in April and I was now brewing in May. Sure enough, the brew had a very grassy nose and is way too light for heading into iced tea weather here in MS. Can only give it three out of five. |

Another delightful entry to the yearly tradition of enjoying the first flush. The gentle muscatel joins nicely with the notes of spring that I've always associated with the first tea of the year. |
