Pumpkin Yixing teapot
I actually bought this teapot because of a NEGATIVE review; the reviewer was disappointed with how small it was. This teapot is small, filled to the brim it holds about 5 ounces of water, but it is supposed to be. It is intended for use with teas that typically make multiple brews. While 5 oz (actually more like 4oz in regular use) may seem awfully small, that is about the volume of a typical teacup (not a mug). Considering that a good green tea should give at least three good drinkable brews, that is actually a fairly good amount of brewed tea. Pu erh especially needs to be brewed in a teapot this small (or smaller) since I typically get upwards of seven (7) brews from the same tea leaves; and they are STILL making drinkable tea at that point. Even with this small teapot, that is over a quart of tea from the same leaves. That is why this teapot is small, it was never intended for use with one or two brew tealeaves. The teapot itself is of the usual Yixing quality…excellent. Fit and finish are about as close to perfect as is possible with clay, the built in strainer is the right size for the tea leaves that it was intended for, so no extra infuser is needed…unless you use the pot for Japanese teas. Sencha and the other Japanese teas have very very small tea leaves, and so a very fine mesh infuser should be used with this pot if you don't want leaves in your cup. But for any chinese green or oolong tea, this pot is perfect.
Yes, this is small but...
All traditional yixing teapots are supposed to be small. They are from China where tea is drunk in small one ounce cups, not large 8 ounce ones. The leaves are to be steeped for much shorter amount of time than suggested - around 30 seconds.
This is certainly a lovely little teapot, but it is really, really LITTLE....from the photo I thought it would hold two cups of tea, but it is tiny, like a teapot for a child. Also, the patina on the pot is not as the picture-- probably because it has not been used. I am looking forward to seeing how that changes though. If you want a yixing pot for more than one person, buy the other one that has the flowers on it.
