10 Wellness Trends to Watch in 2020

Posted: 12/11/2019

The beginning of a new year is a time for self-reflection, positive changes, and seeking opportunities for growth. With 2020 looming on the horizon, our Ministers have been keeping a watchful eye on emerging health and wellness trends for the coming year.

We are pleased to share these findings with our Citizens, to help them on their journeys of enlightenment. Below are the top 10 wellness trends Citizens will want to know of in 2020.

1. Gut Health

In recent years, scientists and doctors have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of the gut microbiome on human health. The tens of trillions of bacteria inside each human body play a critical role in whole-body health and wellbeing.

In 2020, expect to see an even greater prioritization of probiotic-rich foods such as kombucha, yogurt, and probiotic tea. Foods and beverages with prebiotics—a type of dietary fiber that “feeds” gut bacteria—are predicted to trend upwards as well.

2. Oat Milk

First was soy milk, then came almond and coconut milk. In 2020, oat milk will take the stage as one of the fastest-growing milk alternatives. As more consumers continue to experiment with alternative diets such as dairy-free and vegan, these innovative milk alternatives will become even more mainstream.

3. Focus on Sleep

According to the CDC, one-third of American adults do not get enough sleep—a statistic so alarming, they have declared sleep deprivation a public health epidemic.

In the coming year, expect to see a surge of new sleep-focused technologies such as wearable sleep trackers and blue-light blocking glasses. Calming nightly self-care rituals, such as journaling or sipping teas for sleep before bed, may also experience a rise in popularity.

4. Adaptogens

Adaptogens are a category of herbs and mushrooms that may help the body resist occasional stress by adapting their effects to provide calming or stimulating effects as needed.*

2019 delivered a rise in adaptogenic teas and powders, and this trend does not show any sign of slowing in the following year. Expect to see new applications and recipes using adaptogenic ingredients

5. Zero-Proof Drinks

Sober living has expanded to a wide demographic, including those who have adopted the lifestyle for physical and mental wellbeing. Non-alcoholic beverages are on the rise, especially sophisticated and flavorful drinks that can be consumed in social and celebratory settings.

Sonoma teas feature fine wine grape skins and the nuanced flavors of Sonoma wines, making them appropriately festive for special occasions. They can also be used to make alcohol-free mocktails.

6. Flexitarian Diets

The majority of Americans may not be ready to completely give up meat and animal products, but many are open to exploring plant-based eating as part of a “flexitarian” diet.

This means a surge in the consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes, but also a rise in meatless burgers and plant-based proteins. Seafood from made from legumes and algae are predicted to catch on in 2020 as well.

7. Indigenous Superfoods

Turmeric, moringa, nettle, milk thistle—all herbs that have been used by indigenous cultures around the globe for centuries, but have only caught on in the Western world in recent years.

These ancient superfoods aren’t going away anytime soon; in fact, they have been recognized as being among the top wellness trends for 2020. SuperHerb Teas utilize these and other healthful herbs.*

8. “Virtual” Wellness

As our daily schedules become busier and more stressful than ever, a growing number of people are seeking out wellness rituals to help them unwind. Yet, many Citizens have a limited amount of time to commit to these routines.

Wellness apps (such as breathing, mindfulness, meditation and yoga apps) are a way to indulge in self-care and wellness without the hassle of driving to the studio or gym.

9. Plant-Based Sweeteners

America’s collective sweet tooth is unlikely to go away anytime soon, but consumers are increasingly interested in alternative sweeteners that do not contain sugar.

Natural plant-based sweeteners such as monk fruit deliver a touch of sweetness without the adverse health effects linked to sugar.* Experience the refreshing flavor of monk fruit in Single Sips® Teas.

10. Food Sustainability

The belief that Earth’s wellness is linked to human wellness is growing rapidly among individuals from all nations and cultures. In 2020, consumer demand for sustainably-sourced ingredients and foods is predicted to reach new heights. The food sustainability trend encompasses animal welfare, organic farming, sustainable packaging, and social responsibility.
